AP Poll Reveals Most Americans Don’t Describe Harris or Trump as “Christian”
A recent AP poll reveals that many Americans do not view either Kamala Harris or Donald Trump as particularly “Christian,” despite their claims of faith. Conducted from September 12-14 with 2,028 respondents, the poll found that only 14% described either candidate as “Christian” extremely well. Fifty percent said this described Harris poorly, while 63% felt the same about Trump.
Neither candidate scored high on moral or honest traits; 15% described Trump as moral, compared to 33% for Harris. Among white evangelical Protestants, 69% viewed Trump favorably, while 75% of black Protestants favored Harris. Harris, a Baptist, has acknowledged her diverse religious background, including Hindu influences, while Trump, identifying as a nondenominational Christian, has often sought support from evangelicals.
Experts suggest the poll reflects a growing cynicism toward politics, with voters increasingly indifferent to candidates’ personal faith and morality. R. Marie Griffith noted this trend indicates that many believe all politicians are dishonest.
