Nicole’s stepmother, Susan, surprises her with a filthy, old couch for her birthday, and Nicole is torn between keeping the peace with her father or confronting Susan. She decides to restore the couch, putting hours of effort into cleaning, patching, and reupholstering it until it looks like new. Nicole then sells the couch for $5,000, just to see if she could make a profit.
When Susan finds out, she demands half of the money, claiming it was her couch. Nicole refuses, insisting that the work and value she added to the couch are hers. The conflict leaves Nicole bracing for the consequences with her father, unsure of what Susan’s next move will be.
