Emily nodded slowly, absorbing my words.
I put my phone down and tried to focus on the homework in front of me, but the message still gnawed at the back of my mind. What could Jonathan possibly hope to achieve by reaching out again?
The phone buzzed again. This time, it was a follow-up message. *”Please, Becca. I need to see you.”*
I put my phone face down and closed my eyes. This was it—the final test of my resolve.
“You okay, Mom?” Emily asked, sensing my quiet tension.
“Yeah,” I said, taking a deep breath. “I’m fine.”
I looked out the window, the weight of the past few months pressing down on me. There was a part of me that wanted to see him—to hear him say that he was sorry, that he would do whatever it took to make things right. But I knew better. We had already gone through all of that.
It was time to close this chapter for good.
