Detroit Lions Running Back Expresses Confidence That ‘God Will Cover’ Injured Teammate

Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery is expressing his faith in God to look after his injured teammate, Aidan Hutchinson, following a tough game against the Dallas Cowboys. In a postgame interview with Fox Sports’ Erin Andrews on Sunday, Montgomery shared how faith guides him during moments like this and how he is relying on God for Hutchinson’s recovery.

After Hutchinson sustained a serious leg injury, Montgomery explained, “The first thing that I always do is give grace and thanks to God.” He added, “I asked Him to cover him. There are prayers up to him, and I know God will cover him.”

Hutchinson’s injury occurred during a crucial game against the Cowboys, but despite losing their star defensive player, the Lions triumphed with a decisive 47-9 victory. In an update on Hutchinson’s condition, the Detroit Lions revealed that Hutchinson had undergone successful surgery to repair fractures to his tibia and fibula. Hutchinson is expected to make a full recovery, but no timeline for his return has been established yet.

Montgomery’s open display of faith is not unusual for the Lions’ running back. His social media is filled with expressions of his Christian beliefs, and his X bio prominently features the phrase “All In God’s Timing” alongside several prayer-hand emojis. His cover photo includes a passage from Psalm 27: “The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?”

Montgomery’s pinned post on X reflects his journey as an athlete, with a clear message of gratitude toward God. In a 2019 reflection about his time playing football at Iowa State University, Montgomery wrote, “To God Be The Glory !!!!” as he announced his intention to enter the NFL draft. His faith has been an ongoing theme throughout his career, and his spiritual journey has only deepened since entering the league.

In an August 2022 press conference, Montgomery elaborated on the importance of his Christian faith, explaining that his priority is “giving validation to no one but God.” He told reporters, “I’m on a spiritual journey right now for myself.”

The football player went on to say, “It really is God,” noting that focusing on his faith has brought him clarity. “I’m going to go out every day with the opportunity to be the best that I can be. When it’s all said and done, God will take me and put me where I need to be.”

Montgomery also shared how his faith alleviates the pressures of playing in the NFL. “When you don’t have anything to grasp onto or believe in, it becomes a lot harder, and it creates unnecessary pressures. When you got God, and you’re really relying on Him … the pressures that you thought you had, they just disappear because you’re not doing it by yourself.”
